Nyu York : Bi-Defus M. Philip,, 1910

(FT) Cloth, 8vo, 133, 10 pages. 23 cm. The author sees Solomon Schechter’s death as atonement for his mistreatment of the author regarding this work—this being Schecter’s own copy of that very work! Solomon Schechter’s copy, with posthunmous book plate and with Guth’s card still laid in (! ) . Vol. 2 was published 16 years later, in 1926, in Sighet-M. Goldman (#608) notes that “Guth could not afford to publish this volume himself and among those whom he approached for assistance was Solomon Schechter. Schechter was so impressed with the volume and felt that it would make an important contribution to academic scholarship that he promised to have JTSA publish it. Guth proceeded to have the work printed, only to be informed by Schechter that JTSA was not prepared to fund the publication. Guth managed to renegotiate the terms of publication with the printer and had it issued at his own expense. He did not relate this story until he published vol. 2, since Schechter was dead by then and Guth considered his death an atonement for the incident. ” Guth was born in Satu-Mare (Satmar) Hungary in 1856, immigrating to the US in 1898 or 1900.
