H.L. GANTT : Work, Wages, Profits Their Influence On The Cost Of Living

The Engineering Magazine, NY, 1910

'For more than twenty years Mr. Gantt has been closely interested in advanced work in the field of labor management. (Mr. Gantt's) grasp of fundamentals is scientific. His association of effects with their causes is philosophic. In its entirety the work offers an interpretation of industrial conditions and a promise for betterment that makes a classic- a classic of optimism--in the literature of industry' - Introduction. 1910. FIRST EDITION. --WORK, WAGES, and PROFITS - Their Influence of the Cost of Living-- INSCRIBED & DATED by H.L. GANTT. Ex-libris book with occasional underlining. In good condition. Pull out 'Gantt Charts' & graphs in color. H.L. Gantt, an engineer and management consultant, was employed in 1887 by Frederick W. Taylor (then chief engineer of the Midvale Steel Works) to assist in the development of scientific management principles. The Gantt system of scientific management and 'Gantt Charts' would become groundbreaking, revolutionary and a smashing success. It was used on major national infrastructure projects (including Hoover Dam and the Interstate Highway System) and continues to be a tool in project and program management. The Gantt system was not without its critics--These industrial scientific management tools provoked major resentments and opposition from labor's rank-and-file; and at the same time Gantt came under the Influence of Thorsten Veblen. Thus, Gantt elected to part ways with Frederick W. Taylor amid his newly emerging belief in a social responsibility for business. Gantt set up the' New Machine', an association which sought to apply the criteria of industrial efficiency to the political process; and together with Marxist engineer, Walter Polakov, he called for socializing industrial production under the control of its managers [workers].
