Original publisher's beige paper wrappers with blue lettering and illustrations printed on front and back covers. 9" x 11." Ninety-six pages, complete. Many black-and-white illustrations of store products, complete. Unused order form tipped in on inside of front cover, the latter of which has some illustrated advertisements. Pages are very clean and intact except for light age toning, slight wear to corners and edges, a chip in lower corner of fore-edge on Pages 95-96 (affects a few words of an ad and some words of the Index), and a few places of trimming along fore-edge and bottom edge (likely from the original printing process; text is barely affected). Covers are clean and intact overall but have several small closed tears and wrinkles, tape repairs, a brown stain on back, slight darkening, slight chipping along spine, and two chips on back cover (largest measures about 3/4" x 1"; text is barely affected). A Very Good copy. This is a fashion catalog for Hale Bros. & Co. that advertises and showcases a wide variety of the company's products, many of which are illustrated in black-and-white. Much visual appeal with the numerous illustrations. Brief captions describe the products and their prices. This catalog includes men's, women's, and children's and infant's departments. Pages 80-96 contain ads for other companies and brief text promoting different places in California. Among the many products advertised in this catalog are shoes, suspenders, ties, collars, cuffs, shirts, socks, hats, trunks, valises, handbags, jackets, pants, notions, a bronze statue of Hannibal, Mixed Pickles (a book made to resemble a jar of pickles), dolls, toys, board games, photo albums, wallets, brushes, reading glasses, playing cards, clocks, plate chains, lace curtains, towels, corsets, stockings, hand-held fans, art media, sewing supplies, gowns, aprons, and millinery. As noted on the front cover, this catalog is for the Hale Bros. locations at 825, 827, 829, 831, 833, and 835 K Street and 1026 Ninth Street in Sacramento, California. Hale Brothers & Company was an offshoot of a company originally founded by Marshal Hale, Sr. (1809-?), an American businessman and merchant from Vermont who had already started and maintained a successful chain of stores in New York and Michigan. Marshal, Sr. moved with his family to San Jose, California in 1873. Hale Bros. traces its origins to a food store that Marshal, Sr. founded in 1876 with two of his sons, Oliver Ambrose Hale and Evert W. Hale, and a business partner, J. Frank Devenport. Another son of his, James M. Hale, came later to California but joined the family business in 1878 and helped open a store in Salinas. In 1880, another one of Marshal, Sr.'s sons, Prentis Cobb Hale, opened an iteration of the family business that would come to be known as Hale Bros. & Co. with Evert and another one of their brothers. Marshal Hale, Jr. later joined Hale Bros. as a partner in 1886. The store was officially named Hale Brothers & Company in 1881 and later opened locations in Oakland, Petaluma, Salinas, San Francisco, San Jose, and Stockton. Hale Bros.' first location in Sacramento opened in 1880 in the city's Downtown. Hale Bros. last known location in Sacramento was the address at 825-831 K Street.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
