Fremont was the first Republican nominee for United States President and Dayton was nominated as the first Republican nominee for United States Vice President when they ran on the same ticket for the 1856 presidential election. A key issue of the 1856 election was the balance of power between the free and slave states. The Republican Party was formed in 1854 in response to the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Act which provided a loophole for additional slave states to be admitted to the Union under the argument that states alone had the right to determine whether they were to be free or slave states. The Republican Party's platform was to combat slavery and to limit the power of slave states. At the time, the Republican Party was backed by the Northern states and the Democratic Party was supported by the Southern states. James Buchanan, the Democratic nominee, won the 1856 election..
