HARRY : 1904 ORIGINAL ALBUM OF SNAPSHOTS DEPICTING THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES TOWN OF FRANK AND THE WORST CANADIAN NATURAL DISASTER IN NEAR ARCTIC HISTORY

24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. On offer is a super, original 5¼ x 4½ inch photograph album with nine 2½ x 1¾ inch snapshots of Blairmore Northwest Territories including a few of the aftermath of an historic human tragedy known as the Frank Slide, a rockslide that buried part of the mining town of Frank, Northwest Territories, Canada, on the morning of April 29, 1903. It occurred at 4:10 am, when over 82 million tonnes (90 million tons) of limestone rock slid down Turtle Mountain within 100 seconds, obliterating the eastern edge of Frank, the Canadian Pacific Railway line and the coal mine. It was one of the largest landslides in Canadian history and remains the deadliest, as between 70 and 90 of the town's residents were killed, most of whom remain buried in the rubble. Multiple factors led to the slide. Turtle Mountain's formation left it in a constant state of instability. Coal mining operations may have weakened the mountain's internal structure, as did a wet winter and cold snap on the night of the slide. The album dated September 24th 1904 has inscriptions written text below each photo and housed in a wonderful soft hide album which has a drawing of a native of the Northwest Territories marked as From: Harry though the To is unreadable. Overall G+.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Good+
