A seven-page address book precedes the ninety-two-page account book. Pages are clean and intact overall except for light age toning and the small occasional stain. Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate rubbing to front and back (especially noticeable on the paper portions of the boards), light to moderate wear to edges and corners, and slight darkening and soiling. A Very Good copy. This account book was kept by James D. Hart of Medina County, Ohio from 1874-1900. Most of the entries are from the 1870s and 1880s. Hart seems to have done some small-scale farming and lumbering for himself but also hired himself out to do work for many people in the local community. Accounts are listed for about fifty different customers. Hart appears to have been a master of many different trades. He does planting and harvesting. He saws lumber and shingles and delivers firewood. He shoes horses, fixes wagon wheels, and files saws. He does carpentry, both big and small. For one customer, "Dr. D. Bracy," Hart apparently helped build an entire house and barn (entries on Pages 63-65). For a straight day of work, Hart charges $1.00 per day.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good.
