Collection of ten original black-and-white portrait photos in nine paper folders. These are high-quality photos that come in beautiful folders made of stiff paper. There are two types of folders; four folders come with a slightly embossed triangular design on front panel while the other five comes with a floral decorative printed on front. 1928 and 1932. Photo sizes range between 4" x 6" and 6" x 8." Folder sizes: 7 1/2" x 10" (triangular design) and 8" x 11 1/2" (floral design). Each photo is virtually pristine and intact except for light surface wear and slight age toning. The folders are very clean and intact overall but have slight edge wear, a few bumps to the edges and corners, a few dampstains, small occasional marks or smudges, and light age toning. One of the folders with a floral design has a wrinkle on front panel and chipping at the gutter of the decorative paper protecting the photo. Each of the photos is Fine. Each of the folders is Very Good. The collection as a whole is Very Good. This is a collection of nine formal portrait photos of William Hackney Hatcher with one additional portrait photo laid in. There are four different compositions or poses in total among the nine formal portraits. The folders with a triangular design contain two pairs of duplicate photos for four photos in total that are mounted in paper inserts. Each of these four photos were taken on Hatcher's 76th birthday in 1928 as noted by handwritten inscriptions on the insides of the front panels. In one of the compositions, Hatcher is shown wearing a suit and cap and holding a cane while standing. The other composition is relatively more formal and shows Hatcher from about the chest upward wearing a suit and sporting neatly-combed hairstyle. One of the folders with a triangular design also has a smaller laid-in photo showing Hatcher with two young children, perhaps his grandchildren. The remaining five photos in the folders with a floral design also show Hatcher wearing formal attire from the chest upward in two compositions and are framed by matboard. Of these compositions, one of them shows Hatcher wearing a suit again with neatly combed hair (three copies included). The other composition shows Hatcher smiling as he wears a suit and brimmed hat (two copies included). Based on gift inscriptions in two of the folders, these photos were taken in 1932 on the occasion of Hatcher's 80th birthday. At least one of the gift inscriptions may be in Hatcher's hand. One of the inscriptions reads, "To Georgiana, from Grandpa, Apr. 29, 1852-Apr. 29, 1932." The other inscription reads, "To Norman and Adelaide, from Dad. Apr. 29, 1852-Apr. 29, 1932 - 80 yrs. old." The four photos in the folders with the triangular design were taken by Shirley studio in Bell, California. The five photos in the folders with the floral design were taken by Wilson Studio in Huntington Park, California. William Hackney Hatcher (1852-1933) was an early American pioneer. He was a well-traveled man who eventually settled in Arizona. One of the photo's folders has an inscription in black ink that describes his life. Much of the biographical information that follows was taken from this inscription. Hatcher was born on April 29, 1852 in Johnston County, North Carolina. He left North Carolina on March 22, 1870 and arrived in Kansas on March 27, 1870. He then went to "Indian Territory" in 1872 and "remained there and in Texas until April 1877." Hatcher traveled onward and arrived to Chimney Rock, Nebraska in July 1877. He stayed in Nebraska and "Dakota" until spring 1879 and came to Leadville, Colorado in June 1879. Hatcher left for Arizona by team and reached Prescott on July 27, 1879. He lived in Prescott and Douglas (Cochise County), Arizona until April 6, 1928. He arrived in Los Angeles the following day on April 7, 1928. It appears that Hatcher moved back to Arizona as records show that he passed away in Douglas on August 16, 1933.. Photographic Image.
