During the war,Beith serving as an officer in the army in France,he was mentioned in despatches and promoted to Capt in 1915 and in 1916 was awarded the Military Cross for action in the battle of Loos,awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) and promoted to Major in 1918.
