UK,12mo HB+dw/dj,1st edn.VG++/GOOD.No owner inscrptn and an unclipped dw/dj - publisher's printed price (in white) to front lower corner of dw/dj and also to spine (in blue) of same.Colour pictorial illustrated front panel with blue,red and white lettering,blue lettering to spine and publisher's advert to rear panel; with ubiquitous but negligible shelf-wear, bumping or creasing to edges and corners - several nicks and some rubbing with minimal loss to edges and corners,and a couple of tears with subsequent noticeable loss at head+foot of spine.Small,partial loss at head of spine of dw/dj affecting letters of 'YING' of the title and bigger, biggest loss is to foot of same - an approximate 2" high and spreading 1.5" along rear lower edge in a rough triangular shape.Estimate probably about 99% of dw/dj present,but in a tatty state - included for completeness.Top edges inevitably but lightly dust- soiled with some minimal marks,fore-edges paler and brighter but with some minimal,sporadic foxing/ spotting; contents bright,tight, clean,solid and sound - pristine - no dog- ear reading creases to any pages' corners, appears unread - apart from my own collation.Bright,crisp,clean,generally sharp- cornered,publisher's original plain RAF blue cloth bds with bright,crisp, stamped gilt letters to front bd and to spine/backstrip and clean - virtually unblemished,plain white eps.UK,12mo HB+ dw/dj,1st edn,viii-ixpp+2-316pp [paginated] includes author's note,13 chapters,plus [unpaginated] half-title+ title pages,and dedication. John Hay Beith remembered as a,novelist, playwright,essayist and historian who wrote under the pen name Ian Hay and best remembered for 'The First Hundred Thousand',1915 particularly and then the sequel 'Carrying On - After the First Hundred Thousand',1917 ((see my book ID rja777118 - UK,HB 1st edn) and 'The Last Million',1918 (see my book ID rja777218). His good-humoured account of army life,'he First Hundred Thousand' was a best-seller. With the outbreak of war in 1914,Beith joined the army as a second lieutenant in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.In France in April 1915,he was one of the first 100,000 of Kitchener's Army. During the war,Beith serving as an officer in the army in France,he was mentioned in despatches and promoted to Capt in 1915 and in 1916 was awarded the Military Cross for action in the battle of Loos,awarded the CBE (Commander of the British Empire) and promoted to Major in 1918. Since April 2013 and again in March 2015, and in this year too,the UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion template,altering it's prices,weight allowances,dimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!
