Hemingway, Ernest : Marlin Off The Morro: A Cuban Letter in Esquire Magazine, Volume I, No. I

Esquire, Inc., Chicago, 1933

Folio. Entire Autumn issue, October 15, 1933, in original colorful Edward A. Wilson cover. This is a exceptional copy with only a slight nick at spine tail, a partial small dog-ear at lower outer corner, and a bit of rubbing at rear wrap. There is otherwise no creasing, cracking, chipping, bumping, soiling, or other blemishes, and is close to as-new condition. Clearly, it was handled only very lightly. In this, the premier issue of Esquire, the author contributed his first of a series of "letters" that would continue through February, 1939. This one is illustrated with 17 photographs of the author and second wife Pauline Pfeiffer fishing and landing marlin. One photo shows a young John Hemingway with a small marlin. From the opening paragraph, "The rooms on the northeast corner of the Ambos Mundos hotel in Havana look out, to the north, over the old cathedral, the entrance to the harbor, and the sea, and to the east to Casablanca peninsula, the roofs of all house in between and the width of the harbor. If you sleep with your feet to the east, this may be against the tenants of certain religions, the sun, coming up over the Casablanca side and into your open window, will shine on your face and wake you no matter where you were the night before." Issue includes other non-fiction from Nicholas Murray Butler, Gilbert Seldes, Ring Lardner, Jr., and Charles Hanson Towne, fiction from John Dos Passos, Morley Callaghan, William McFee, Erskine Caldwell, Robert Buckner, Dashiell Hammett, Manuel Komroff, David Hoadley Munroe, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Dan Muller, Vincent Starrett, semi-fiction from P-173, sports from golf master and champion Bobby Jones, boxer Gene Tunney, Benny Leonard, and Charley Paddock, poetry from Audrey Wurdemann, and Joseph Auslander, book notes from James T. Farrell, humorous sketches and essays from George Ade, Geoffrey Kerr, George S. Chappell, Montague Glass, and Harry Hershfield, photography from Gilbert Seehausen, and Paul Trebilcock, and cartoons from C. Alajalov, William Steig, E. Simms Campbell, John Groth, George Petty, Nat Karson, and Ty Mahon. In all, 36 color illustrations are noted including 2 Petty girls. See Hanneman C209.. Magazine. Book Condition: Fine.
