On offer is a sensational, historical archive of British Naval Marine significance being a multi-year series of in depth autograph letters [150+] handwritten to his wife May by Henry J. Haddon (1861-1929), a surgeon in the Royal Navy. Offering the historian and researcher of naval and marine life a unique opportunity of having together with Henry's letters to his wife there are 57 letters from her to him entirely written from "Lis-na-bin", Bray, County Wicklow, Ireland, some quite extensive, about 450-sides in all; these dated 1897 and 1898. [We list separately his 1887-1888 diary of his service pre marriage in the Australasian Station for the Navy.] Together with two cabinet photographs of May with their young child dated 1898 and 1900, also a few family photographs, a number of loose pages bearing items relevant to his earlier naval career, e.g. the programme of a Gymkhana Meeting near Fort Mahgar 1892, news-cuttings etc. Also the passenger list of the White Star Line R.M.S.S. 'Britanic', New York to Liverpool 1897 in which Surgeon Haddon (sic) R.N. & Mrs. Haddon are shown as passengers. Bio notes: Haddon qualified in Dublin and joined the Navy in 1885, retiring in 1906. He came out of retirement at the beginning of WWI. In all 152 letters, ca. 550-sides 8vo. Written whilst serving on board H.M.S. 'Thunderer' 1897-1898 (23 letters mostly at Pembroke Dock; together with a further 30 letters written from "The Surgery" - presumably at Pembroke Dock, "Argyle House" and no place, these also 1897-1898 and no dates); H.M.S. 'Cruiser' 1899-1902 (26 letters at sea, Malta, Naples, etc.); notably the H.M.S. 'Empress of India' Home Fleet 1903-1904 (7 letters); H.M.S. 'London' Mediterranean Station 1905-1906 (30 letters); and perhaps most notably Haddon's service in the 'Great War' the H.M.S. 'Victorian' in the Atlantic 1914-1915 (37 letters) a ship noted as an Armed Merchant Cruiser of the 10th Cruiser Squadron engaged in intercepting ships bound for European ports. Casual reading finds references to manoeuvres, exercises, places visited, and domestic matters. With great charm he mostly signs himself "Jinks". Overall VG.. Manuscript.
