This is the 144th title since the publisher's inception. On Monday,April 25,1898,William Sydney Porter,convicted of embezzlement from the Bank at Austin,Texas,where he had been a 'teller',was admitted to the Ohio State Penitentiary as prisoner number 30664. Porter (1862-1910) was a man of thirty- six,a native of Greensboro,North Carolina, who had led a roving life,following several sorts of employment (including journalism) and seeing,like Ulysses,many men and cities.The prison gates closed on him for a five-year sentence,but in fact William Sydney Porter never reappeared. Instead,when the gates opened again on July 24,1901 (he had earned his remission),the man who emerged was 'O.Henry' and O.Henry in the ten years of his life that remained to him was the name he made internationally famous. During his prison term Porter continued to write and (American regulations being laxer than the British) he was able to send his stories out to editors.Some were accepted,and he began to use the pen-name 'O.Henry' - the origin of which is obscure.When he left prison he had a large sheaf of stories under his arm,and a ready market waiting.He went to New York,and became a full-time author. Paul Hogarth,b.1917 Kendal,Cumbria,son of a master butcher and farmer.Studied at Manchester College of Art (1933-6) and at St Martin's School of Art,London (1938- 40).Worked as assistant to James Boswell (New Zealand,1906-71) from 1946-8.Lecturer at the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1950-4),senior lecturer at Cambridge School of Art (1959-61),tutor at the Royal College of Art (1964-71) and a visiting lecturer there (1971-82).During the 1950's and 1960's,he worked mainly in charcoal or very soft pencil on high quality paper,but more recently much of his work has been in colour,and he has made lithographic prints,for which he is better known.
