Original pencil drawing on beige paper. The drawing shows a head portrait of Henry Irving wearing a hooded costume in side profile, facing left. Former owners' inscriptions on back in ink and pencil. No date, circa 1890s-1900s. 2 1/2" x 3 1/2." Drawing was made at the Windsor Hotel in Glasgow, Scotland. Drawing is very clean and intact except for age toning, a few wrinkles and creases at the edges, and slight wear to extremities. A Very Good copy. Henry Irving (1838-1905) was one of the most revered actors of the English stage in his time. George Henschel (1850-1934) was a German-British baritone, pianist, and composer. This portrait sketch of Irving was done by Henschel. Two handwritten notations, possibly in two different hands, on the back of the drawing state that the drawing was made at a dinner for Irving at Glasgow's Windsor Hotel and that the drawing was done by Henschel..
