Bilingual tract, with English text to one half of the booklet, and Afrikaans to reverse side. Small tear to end of spine fold; regular, light browning. Very good condition. Housed in a film-fronted bag. A United Party response to Nationalist maneuvres in forcing the enactment of the Separate Representation of Voters' Bill. The abstract on the front page reads: "When the Nationalist Party came to power in 1948, the hundred-year old common roll rights of the Coloured Voters of the Cape Province became the subject of a major political controversy, which still rages. Here are set down the facts of the controversy with which the voters of South Africa should be fully acquainted." The arguments presented in the booklet are an odd mix of sound reason and only slightly diluted racism. Although actively opposing the Nationalists' objective of separate representation for Coloureds (persons of largely mixed race, in the South African context), as in the comment '"Apartheid" ideology so emphasises racial differences that South Africa would ultimately become split up into a number of racial states' (p. 14), the pamphlet concludes with the statement, 'The United Party fights for the honour and security of the White Man. Support it.'
