Original publisher's flyer printed on beige paper. No date, circa 1886. 6 3/8" x 5 1/8." Three pages, complete. One sheet folded to make four leaves. Three of the pages have printed text. Former ownership drawing and inscription in pencil. Drawing show shows the side profile of a woman wearing a hat. Inscription says, "'A white screen tends to set me nodding' (Betts)." Flyer promotes a lecture series by James K. Hosmer. The first page lists a quote by George Eliot, the pen name of author Mary Ann Evans. The following is from Eliot's quote which refers to Jewish people: "Tortured, flogged, spit upon, their name flung at them as an opprobrium by superstition and hatred, how proud they have remained!" Pages are very clean and intact except for horizontal and vertical fold lines at the center. Small chip above the title which does not affect text. James K. Hosmer (1834-1927) was an American professor, historian, and writer. He began his career as a minister but later became a professor at Antioch College, the University of Missouri, and Washington University, St. Louis, Missouri. Hosmer was also the president of the American Library Association from 1902-1903 and was a fellow of the American Academy Arts and Sciences.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: No Binding
