Hubert Goltzius : Icones imperatorum romanorum, ex priscis numismatibus ad viuum delineatae, & breui Narratione. .

Casperii Gevartii, Antwerp, 1645

Contemporary full calf, spine with 7 densely gilt compartments of raised bands, gilt lettering on two, all edges speckled red. , Occasional faint browning otherwise a very good to fine example of this important book on Roman coins which illustrates handsome portraits of Roman emperors. , Small folio, P. half-title, blank, engraved title, blank, v-xiv, (2), 1-423, (3), printer’s imprint., Superbly engraved title by Cornelius Galle after Peter Paul Rubens. Elaborate initials, 160 numbered portraits, 9 of which have been left blank and were not completed by the printer. Also 7 are numbered as two because two faces are found within one oval. In total there are 144 actual Chiaroscuro plates (a deep brown background with white highlights making these plates particularly striking and unusual.) The portraits are of the various empeorors of Rome from Julius Ceaser onwards. The plates of this 1645 edition were engraved by Christian Jegher (a prominent German engraver who worked in Holland) to which he added some additional plates.

Chiaroscuro printing is rare, it was designed to make a print look like a renaissance wash drawing, and was in fact early colour printing using 2 or 3 closely related shades. , Cicognara 2868; Brunet II, 1653; Funck 324
