Original typescript on beige paper. Stapled in upper-left corner. 8" x 12 1/2." Five pages, complete. "Department of State" printed at top. Two former owner's inscriptions in pencil and red colored pencil on back and front, respectively. Inscription on back reads, "From Colbert Johnson; Speech." Front inscription reads, "Interesting! PES." Horizontal fold line at center of all pages (document folded in half). Pages are very clean and intact overall. Pages have slight wrinkling and age toning. Staple has left small rust imprint in lower-left corner of Page 1. A Very Good copy. A transcript of a radio address given by Charles E. Hughes (1862-1948), an American politician, the 11th Chief Justice of the United States, and the 44th Secretary of State. Hughes also served as the 36th Governor of New York and was the Republican presidential nominee for the 1916 presidential election. In this typescript, Hughes discusses recent events in South America and the importance of Pan-Americanism, a political ideology that promotes peace and unity throughout the Americas. Political events that are mentioned include the Battle of Ayacucho in Peru, recent Pan-American Conferences, and the United States' occupations in Santo Domingo and Nicaragua. Hughes also refutes any claims that the U.S. is being imperialistic and defends the Monroe Doctrine. The overarching theme of the radio address is Pan-Americanism.. Manuscript.
