Infidelity and Abolitionism. An Open Letter to the Friends of Religion, Morality, and the American Union

Original publisher's beige pamphlet. 5" x 8." Seven pages, complete. Pages are very clean and intact. Chipping along the spine. Vertical fold line down the center. A Very Good copy. This is a political pamphlet with a propagandist bent denouncing the candidacy of Republican nominee John C. Fremont in the 1856 presidential election. The anonymous author also criticizes the abolition movement at large and other abolitionists such as Wendell Phillips and Horace Greeley from the point of view that abolition is anti-religious and anti-Union. The central issue of this election was the Kansas-Nebraska Act which had essentially repealed the Missouri Compromise. The Missouri Compromise had prevented slave states from being admitted in the north above a certain latitude. The Kansas-Nebraska Act nullified the Missouri Compromise by allowing the states of Kansas and Nebraska to decide whether or not they should be admitted as free or slave states. The Republican Party was formed in 1854 expressly for the purpose of combating the Kansas-Nebraska Act and the expansion of slavery. As a whole, the Republican Party championed the abolition of slavery and won support from the Northern states while the Democratic Party was backed by slave owners and supported by the Southern States. In the end, Democratic nominee James Buchanan won the 1856 presidential election.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
