An older suburb, now rather dank. The family had always lived there, the district suited them.Everyone turned out for the funeral of Grandfather Stone and in the "Lord of Cawnpore" they had double gins all round.Victor was a bit odd but that was to be expected in the last of the Blearmans and although Ern Fowler said afterwards that he never trusted Frank most people in the "Lord" felt sorry for the poor chap.He used to be a regular in the private bar and he always paid his way.Who the hell was Ern Fowler anyhow? He didn't belong round there, he come out of the Brecknock. In 'Me and Victor and Mrs Blanchard' the characters are never too far from a pub and never too happy with their jobs. The social protest has gone, the moral tone is not there but the order of things does not change.Fate still travels with one on the Northern line, a young widow must improve her nights with someone and if a middle-aged man falls in love bless his horrible luck. All this, it must be admitted, gives practically no idea at all of what Ingrey's first novel is about - but to give away any more would be impolitic. Bizarre, widly funny, totally uninhibited, the novel is a knock-out.
