There is, at the same time, a wonderful and moving sense of "elective affinities" about the imagery because of his lifelong devotion/affection for his adopted city (Chicago), where he studied, developed, and matured as an artist, and his fierce attachment/loyalty to home (Tokyo), where he is revered as a National Artist. Ishimoto donated 200 vintage prints, representing the work of a lifetime, to the Art Institute of Chicago, which now owns the single largest and most important Permanent Collection of his work in the West.
