Art Institute Of Chicago, Chicago, IL, 1999

ISBN 0865591709

First Edition / First Printing. As New in As New Dust Jacket. 144 pages. Retrospective Exhibition Monograph. Now considered a late-modern art photography classic. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The Exhibition Monograph is now scarce. A brilliant production by Carl Zahn: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Yasuhiro Ishimoto. Essays by Colin Westerbeck, Arata Isozaki, and Fuminore Yokoe. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in Tokyo, Japan to the highest standards. In glossy integral pictorial DJ with black titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark exhibition of the same name held at the Art Institute of Chicago from May 8 to September 12, 1999. Presents "Yasuhiro Ishimoto: A Tale of Two Cities". The great Japanese photographer's work in two places: Tokyo and Chicago. Through his radical juxtaposition of disparate images, Ishimoto delineates the striking differences between the two cities, both of which he photographed with an acute eye. There is, at the same time, a wonderful and moving sense of "elective affinities" about the imagery because of his lifelong devotion/affection for his adopted city (Chicago), where he studied, developed, and matured as an artist, and his fierce attachment/loyalty to home (Tokyo), where he is revered as a National Artist. Ishimoto donated 200 vintage prints, representing the work of a lifetime, to the Art Institute of Chicago, which now owns the single largest and most important Permanent Collection of his work in the West. Yasuhiro Ishimoto died on February 6, 2012 at the age of 90. His stature as "photographer's photographer" will remain secure. An absolute "must-have" title for Yasuhiro Ishimoto collectors. This copy is very prominently, appropriately, and beautifully signed twice (in Roman alphabet and Japanese characters) and inscribed in black pen on the title page by Yasuhiro Ishimoto: "With great pleasure, Yasuhiro Ishimoto". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is no recipient named. This title is a late-modern photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed and inscribed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Even in Japan, Yasuhiro Ishimoto was known for being averse to book signings. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white and color plates. Yasuhiro Ishimoto's "Someday, Somewhere" and "Chicago, Chicago" were selected as two of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER YASUHIRO ISHIMOTO TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 0865591709.
