J.W.FORTESCUE : The Story of a Red-Deer. With decorations by Dorothy Burroughes

The Gregynog Press, Newtown, 1935

The first edition with these illustrations, which comprise a title page decoration and eleven delightful colour chapter header decorations. Number 43 of 250 hand-set copies, printed and bound at the Gregynog Press. 4to. 125pp. Terracotta-brown cloth lettered in gold at the spine with a gilt-stamped stag vignette to the upper board. Cloth a little marked and soiled, with some rubbing to the spine ends and several corner tips. Some spotting, mostly marginal, to the final eight leaves, and a small area of browning to the base of the backstrip, suggesting a small sticker was once in situ. A very nice copy, particularly crisp internally. Former owner name neatly inked to the front free endpaper. Originally published in 1897, Fortescue's story is told from the point-of-view of an Exmoor deer and was written for his nine-year-old nephew. Thirty years later Fortescue would pen the introduction to another celebrated Devon nature book, Henry Williamson's 'Tarka the Otter'. Thomas [35].. Book. Book Condition: Very Good.
