Six glazed linen maps. The maps cover the areas from southern Rhodesia to Northern Natal and Northern Orange Free State, from the Bechuanaland Protectorate border areas to Tongaland and southern Portuguese Territory (Mozambique)in intense and dense detail. Produced by Fred. Jeppe of the Surveyor General?s Department and C.F.W. Jeppe, of the Mining Department. The maps show towns, farm boundaries, farm names, farm registration numbers, farms under the jurisdiction of Mining Commissioners, roads, railways, postal routes, custom houses, postal and telegraph information, proclaimed gold fields, mynpachten, kraals and "locations", mountains and rivers. The details were of such accuracy that the maps were confiscated in London by the War Office. General Roberts relied on the maps (which include heavily detailed maps of Johannesburg and Pretoria) for his entry into Pretoria. It is RARE to find all six maps available together. The maps are numbered 1-6 on the rear top left corner. They were beautifully and most carefully lithographed onto the material by Wurster, Randegger & Cie (J Schlumpf), Winterhur, Switzerland. Bar scale of main map in English statute miles., Inset maps include: 'Plan of Johannesburg and surrounding suburbs and townships reduced from "Pritchard's commercial map of J'hburg"' and 'Plan of Pretoria suburbs and surrounding grounds, reduced from original plan compiled in the Surveyor General's Office, Pretoria, S.A.R.' Scale [ca. 1:9 446]. Bar scales in Cape feet., To be used in conjunction with Jeppe's map: Hugh F. Marriot's Alphabetical index to the farms of the Transvaal. The maps are housed in original card wallet. This is much worn, creased, foxed, marked. It is fit for its purpose, sound and secure. Each of the maps have speckles of foxing on the blank rear faces. Map 1 (of Johannesburg and Pretoria) has some rusting along some of the folds. Otherwise, the maps are fresh and clean and very healthy. Map 2 (21' - 25'S / 28' - 30'E) has just some light rusting along the folds at the very top of the map. Map 3 (21'-25'S / 30.5'- 33'E) has very light rust-marks along the top horizontal fold. Map 4 (25'- 29'S / 24.5'- 27.5'E) is smart and clean with just some very light foxing marks to the edges. Map 5 - the Grand Map of the series: "Jeppe's Map of the Transvaal or SA Republic and Surrounding Territories compiled from surveys filed in the Surveyor General's Office by Fred. Jeppe, Hon CMRGS etc of the Surveyor General's Department and CFW Jeppe, of the Mining Department. The Compilers are greatly indebted to Johann Rissik Esq. Surveyor General of the SAR for much valuable information and advice" - a beautiful map. It has some foxing about the very edges. The bottom folds have very coy powder-dustings of rusting. Map 6 (25'- 29'S / 30.5'- 33'E) is bright, elegant and most attractive. The edges have light foxing marks. All the maps are in healthy, vivid condition. The colours and details are fine, sharp. The colours are gentle, genteel, aglow. The cloth of each is healthy, in youthful condition. A most generous and lovely - even addictive - set of maps. fk. Book Condition: Very Good.
