A very scarce early edition of this important Elizabethan defence of the Anglican Church. A very good copy indeed in contemporary blindstamped calf, corners worn, spine lacking lower panel and chip to lower portion second panel, binding tight, text clean with wide margins. An 8 line Latin verse by J. Owen "In Consideration of Sr. Phillip Sydney" in ink, contemporary with publication, on blank preliminary leaf. John Jewel, (born May 24, 1522, Buden, Devon, England—died September 23, 1571, Monkton Farleigh, Wiltshire), Anglican bishop of Salisbury and controversialist who defended Queen Elizabeth I’s religious policies opposing Roman Catholicism. First published in 1562, all early editions are scarce.
