In his introduction, the author laments the replacement of the beehive shaped huts, 'which blend so artfully into the majestic mountain scenery' with 'brick and corrugated iron structures' in the Upper Tugela Reserve. He writes: 'It is not only a cultural loss if the grass hut disappears. The poorly designed "modern" houses have bad ventilating and heating facilities and are unhealthy to live in. .... There are economic implications too. It would seem to be more prudent to spend the labour and cash money on agricultural capital investments than on these badly designed and built houses, and to retain the grass hut which is by far cheaper and can be built by woman labour. From the soil conservation angle it must be remembered that most of the "modern" houses are built with sod bricks which causes a loss of valuable top-soil and starts erosion gulleys'.
