Koch, Lewis (Artist/Photographer) & Ashbery, John (Contribution) : Touchless Automatic Wonder: Found Text Photographs From The Real World

Borderland Books, Madison, WI, 2009

First Edition / First Printing. Fine in No Dust Jacket, As Issued. 112 pages. Collection of black-and-white photographs on subject. One of the most beguiling Conceptual art photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run of 1500 copies as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. A brilliant production by Lewis Koch: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and text by Lewis Koch. Poetic fragment by John Ashbery. Printed in duotone on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Lewis Koch's "Touchless Automatic Wonder: Found Text Photographs From The Real World". Witty emblems and icons from the American and European scenes. The title comes from the cover image, a building named as such. "Created as a poetic and visual journey, spans twenty-five years and four continents. These striking photographs capture 'found text': The sometimes mysterious, occasionally humorous, often cryptic presence of words in the everyday landscape. In Koch's lyrical sequencing, the images reveal obscure and eccentric voices in their various and distinctive roles on the daily stage of the world around us. This intriguing approach at the intersection of language, image, and the social landscape will appeal to readers interested in contemporary art and photography, popular culture, and conceptual concerns both literary and visual" (Publisher's blurb). Koch is an artist's artist who makes photographic works, site-specific installations, and sculptural assemblage. He has exhibited extensively throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, in which countries his work is in the Permanent Collections of major museums. He isn't as well-known as Ed Ruscha (although he deserves to be). Like Ruscha, he makes his own Artist Books from scratch: From concept to image to design to full realization. An absolute "must-have" title for Lewis Koch collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed, placed, and dated in black ink-pen on the title page by the artist/photographer: "Lewis Koch Madison, WI 2016". It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary Artist Book classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed, placed, and dated copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. Please note: Copies available online have serious flaws. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare signed copy thus. One of the most brilliant American artist/photographers of our time. A fine copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER LEWIS KOCH AND ED RUSCHA TITLES IN OUR CATALOG).
