Signature of Martha J. Lamb in black ink on a beige piece of paper. Signed, "Martha J. Lamb." Envelope addressed to Lillie L. Bartlett of Long Island included. No date, circa 1850s-1880s (postmarked March 30 in New York but with no year). 5" x 2 3/4." Signature is virtually pristine and intact. Paper is virtually pristine and intact except for a vertical fold line at center, minuscule age toning, and two minuscule spots on back. Envelope is clean and intact overall but has age toning and a few small marks and wrinkles and has been opened along the top. Signature on paper is Near Fine. Envelope is Very Good. Signature with the envelope is Near Fine overall. Martha J. Lamb (1826-1893) was an American author, editor, and historian. As a writer, Lamb wrote a number of children's literature, a novel, and nonfictional books and many magazine articles. She did not have formal training as a historian, but her historical writings were praised by a contemporary historian, George Bancroft. Lamb was a prominent member of New York social circles and was invited twice to the White House in 1886 and 1889 by Presidents Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison, respectively. Lamb was also a member of historical societies and did charitable work such as co-founding the Friendless and Half-Orphan Asylum.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Near Fine (Near Fine).
