Landsborough Thomson, A : Britain's Birds and Their Nests

(London: The Waverley Book Company, 1930)

Illustrated with 132 drawings in colour by George Rankin. 4to; original blind-stamped blue cloth; spine ornately gilt; pp. xxviii + 340, incl. index; 132 colour plates. Cloth a little stippled; boards very slightly bowed; moderate foxing throughout. Good condition. Sir Arthur Landsborough Thomson (October 8, 1890 - June 9, 1977) was best known for his work on bird migration, his major work on the subject being Problems in Bird Migration (1926). In contrast with the rather dry, academic style of the migration study, which lacks illustrations, the present work is a lavishly illustrated collaboration with Landsborough Thomson's fellow-Scot George Rankin (1864-1937). The plates are lovely. "The main reason for the publication of this book is Mr Rankin's magnificent series of 132 coloured plates of British-nesting birds. The series includes nearly all the species which nest in the British Isles in appreciable numbers, and a few rarer birds of special interest. … The purpose of the text is to give in popular language an account of the natural history of British-breeding birds, considered as such."
