Original publisher's green cloth binding (stiff wrappers backed with green cloth). 4 1/4" x 7." 132 pages, complete. Ten black and white illustrations, complete. Twelve additional pages of advertisements for other books in the back. Former owner's signature written in pencil on front free endpaper with 1864 as the date. A small name label from a former owner ("T. R. Brooks.") is tipped in on the title page in the top margin. Pages and covers are very clean and intact overall. Fading and handwriting in black ink at the spine. A few small spots, possibly dampstaining, near the top edge of the front cover. Frontispiece has a few dampstains. Small bump on fore-edge of first several pages. Dionysius Lardner (1793-1859) was an Irish professor and scientific writer whose publications helped popularize science and technology at the time. Excerpt from the Preface: "In this little book an ateempt has been made to supply, in generally intelligible language, an explanation of the facts and mechanical principles on which the structure and operation of Steam Engines depend.".
