She was born in Perry, Missouri and moved to Spokane, Washington in 1904 when she was seven years old. She began her writing career after being inspired from stories told by her husband, Charles Lashbrook, about his childhood in Lemhi County, Idaho. She went on to write articles and stories for the Spokesman-Review, Statewide (a local Idaho news magazine), and a variety of other magazines and periodicals. Many of her nonfiction works focus on local histories. A typescript article by Mary Pease Lashbrook about her childhood in Spokane. About 1730 words in length (noted on first page). Mary tells her story chronologically, beginning with her family's move from Missouri to Spokane. Once they reach Spokane, she talks about her father finding a house to rent. Mary continues and says she and her sisters were afraid of the Native Americans who lived there. However, her tone changes when she talks about their interactions with James "Curly Jim" Silkoewoyeh, a member of the Spokane tribe whom she describes as "very friendly." While still voicing apprehension of Curly Jim, Mary refers to how he was quite famous and that he had befriended many of the locals in Spokane. Mary proceeds to talk about other events such as their move to the countryside and the construction of their own house. She fondly reminisces about watching a train go by in the night, "looking like a glow worm," eating rolls called "snails," and enjoying a wintertime supply of doughnuts and fried apple turnovers after her family received a bounty of cottonseed oil in a trade. She then recounts her time visiting the zoo and Natatorium Park and listening to Billy Sunday sermons in 1909. She also mentions shopping at Miller, Mower and Flynne's store. One of the last events Mary talks about is visiting the Spokane Interstate Fair with her family and riding in their 490 Chevrolet to get there.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Soft cover
