Anne Harriet Fish(d.1964.).Worked as 'Fish'.Married name: Mrs Sefton.Born Bristol,UK.Studied under John Hassall and at the London School of Art and in Paris. She lived in London,at East Grinstead, Sussex and at St Ives,Cornwall. She was a mainstay of 'The Tatler' during the 1920's and 1930's,contributing drawings and caricatures in a mannered Art Deco idiom somewhat resembling the work of Aubrey Hammond, but deriving ultimately from Aubrey Beardsley's work. Cornelius Veth regarded her as one of the most important social satirists of the day.He wrote that she depicted modern society with modern boldness, using its own weapons to attack it with cynical understanding - 'the mock naivete of her drawings makes the shamelessness of the subjects acceptable. . . It is a world where the girls, emancipated in the wrong way,are masters of a piteous situation.'He saw her drawings as 'morally speaking. . . .cruel, almost perverse, without however being wholly vicious.' Today her economical and polished designs come across as amusingly sharp, satirical commentaries on the flapper lifestyle. In graphic style and often in subject, her book illustrations resemble her magazine drawings.
