The photos span a period from about the 1920s-1971 and feature Lemaitre, people in his life, and places he and his family members or acquaintances have visited. Georges Edouard Lemaitre (1898-1972) was an Algerian-born college professor, author, and authority on French literature. He received his education in Algiers and Paris. He came to North America in 1927 and lived in Canada and the United States thereafter. Over the span of thirty-plus years, he wrote seven books on French literature including From Cubism to Surrealism (1941). Lemaitre taught at McGill University in Montreal from 1929-1938 and then had a long tenure at Stanford University from 1939-1971. Most of the photos show Lemaitre's life away from his profession. A little over half of the photos appear to have been taken while Lemaitre was living in Canada or an earlier time period. There are about sixteen pages of photos of his wife, Wynifred Eaves (1908-?) and their life together. They were married from 1937-1946. Also included are photos of Lemaitre's travels to Europe and Asia. Many of the photos show women in his life. Most of the photos are portraits. The following are some of the other subjects in the photos of Vol. I: people in a snowy city; people swimming; Lemaitre in Asia (possibly Japan); Lemaitre and a Japanese acquaintance pose for a formal portrait; a tropical destination, possibly in Asia; the Taj Mahal; bucolic flower-covered fields; canoeing; and a view of a European city with a domed building in the background. The following are some of the other subjects in the photos of Vol. II: scenic beaches; car driving through a California redwood with its base tunneled through; a ship; a European city and waterfront; family gatherings; and a vacation to a tropical locale.. Ephemera. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: Hardcover
