A head and shoulders image, showing Leyds in formal dress The whole image is 110 x 150mm. It has been adapted for newspaper reproduction to accompany an article: the background has been shaded grey, and the image has a white frame 60 x 95mm showing the required part of the photograph. The inscription is "Asn Kees van Hoek (signed) W J Leyds 18 Jan 1938". On the rear is a slip "Dr Leyds as he is today, a recent photograph autographed at the close of these interviews" , with the stamp of The Star Newspaper. Willem Johannes Leyds (Magelang, Dutch East Indies, 1 May 1859 – The Hague, Netherlands, 14 May 1940) was a Dutch lawyer and statesman, who made a career as State Attorney (1884-1889) and State Secretary (1889-1898) of the South African Republic. From 1898 to 1902, during the crucial period of the South African War, he was the Republic’s Special Envoy and Minister Plenipotentiary in Brussels, accredited to several European states.
