Leys, Norman (Fulani bin Fulani) : Kenya

(London: The Hogarth Press, 1924)

Introduction by Professor Gilbert Murray. 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; pp. 409, incl. index, plus publishers' advertisements; frontis. map. Cloth rather frayed, and sunned on spine; binding a bit slack; earlier owner's name signed in pencil on prelim.; foxing throughout, which is quite pronounced in places. Fair condition. (Royal Empire Society: The British Empire Generally and Africa, p. 171; Tenri Africana 1812) "This book has been preparing for fifteen years. The list of its helpers and critics is, accordingly, a very long one, ranging from the nearest of relations and the oldest of friends to casual acquaintances of an hour. For years I measured the heads and noses of all Africans who allowed me to, and whenever there was opportunity I took soundings of what their heads contained as well. On some subjects the method of direct questioning is quite unreliable in the case of Africans. Opinions likely to be unwelcome to Europeans can be got at only by listening to Africans talking among themselves. But questions like how much a man's wages are, how many people's taxes he has to pay, even why he is a Christian, or a Moslem, can as a rule be asked without offence of an African by any European with a fair knowledge of the man's language who is careful with the preliminaries considered requisite to good manners in African society. Thousands of answers to such questions, and many of the arguments that frequently resulted, have gone to the making of this book." Chapter headings: Historical and general, East African life of yesterday, Recent history, The Masai, An episode in the history of the Giriama tribe, The European colony, Black and White, Industry, Christian missions, Islam in East Africa, Results - economic, Results - social, A minor rebellion in Nyasaland, Since the War, Summary, The future.
