Thee letters are addressed to a Mr Kahanovits who is researching Ruickword for thesis. The first letter expresses his pleasure that the recipient is researching this neglected figure. He mentions that he had censored his published account of Rickword, whom he feels would have developed into a major poet as against the "poets of politics" Auden and Spender. He promises to attempt a short account of Rickword. He also draws attention to the importance of Baudelaire i Rickword's work. The second letter follows up: he wishes to help but at the same time to avoid hurting Rickword's feelings in any way. He refers to the London Aphrodite and the favourable reviews of the first two volumes of his autobiography. The third letter is in fact the promised account of Edgell Rickword. It occupies 70 lines of type. He expands on the Baudelairian aspects of Rickword, stating that only Edith Sitwell and T S Eliot among Engl;ish poets realised Baudelaire's mindset and influence. He then discusses Baudelaire's cult of the whore, and then goes on to describe intimate aspects of Rickword's relationship with Jenny. The final section deals with Lindsay's view that Rickword was trying to live out his poetry in real life.He ends with comments on his political views and how they impacted on his life.
