LONRHO : Report on the Engineering Aspects of a Northern Rhodesia - Tanganyika Rail Link (Northern Rhodesia Section)

Lonrho Limited, 1963

A fine unread copy in the original maroon rexine gilt as issued. Extremely scarce, the only copy we have seen in the last 30 years. The proposed rail link from Northern Rhodesia to the Tanganyika border would cost GBP 17 400 000, according to a feasibility survey carried out by Lonrho for the Northern Rhodesia [now Zambia] Government. It is estimated that the project could be completed in four years. The estimate includes the cost of signal and station installations, water supplies for locomotives, maintenance during construction and interest charges on capital during construction? (Railway Engineering, November 1963) : It is of interest that the line was finally constructed by the Chinese and opened in 1976 as the ?Great Uhuru Railway? as a way to minimise the use of traditional southern routes to South African ports. It also opened after the Benguela Railway in Angola was closed because of insurgent activity. Unfortunately, the line, now known as Tazara, has never lived up to expectations in terms of traffic. The route, strategic and important as it is, currently moves well under one-million tons of traffic against original expectations of two to four million tons.
