At the top is written in ink, "May 25, 1803-April 27, 1882"; at the bottom is written, "And what is a weed? / A plant whose virtues have / not yet been discovered / Ralph Waldo Emerson". The lower text is written over faint ruled lines in pencil. This is understood to be a trial impression, perhaps because of a small marginal rubbed area center right.
