He earned a Master of Arts degree in 1835, then devoted a number of years to the study of art in Europe. He joined the gold migration in 1849, traveled through the gold fields and visited gold mines on the Tuolumne, Stanislaus, and Merced rivers. He appears to have devoted more time to his sketch book than to the "pick, pan, or shovel". "The student of California history is also under obligation to M'iIvaine for the brief comment with which he supplements each of his plates. A surprising number of these descriptions contain unusual details or items of historic interest that the writer of the present Foreword at least has not encountered elsewhere".. Book.
