MA JIAN : Stick Out Your Tongue. A novella. Translated from the Chinese by Flora Drew

Chatto & Windus, London, 2006

First English Edition (first printing). 8vo. 90pp. Black cloth lettered in silver at the spine. The head of the backstrip gently bruised. Very good indeed in very good non-price-clipped dust wrapper, with several faint but lengthy vertical creases to the front panel. The author's first book, a series of interlinked stories based on his travels in Tibet in 1985. It was originally printed in a February 1987 double issue of the Chinese periodical 'People's Literature', but upon publication deemed an example of bourgeois liberalism and, bafflingly, pornography, and the entire issue was confiscated and destroyed. The editor of the journal was fired and a blanket ban was placed on the future publication of Ma Jian's books (his subsequent works, particularly 'Beijing Coma' and 'The Dark Road', would paint a significantly more savage portrait of the Chinese government than is on view here). This first English edition is enhanced with a new nine-page afterword detailing the denouncement of the book by the Chinese government.. Book. Book Condition: Very Good. Binding: Hardcover. Jacket: Very Good
