An introduction gives a brief biography of Charles-Nicholas Cochin (1715-1790), a French engraver, designer, author, and art critic whose designs are the basis of the engravings contained in this edition. Cochin gained much prominence in his career for his artistic talent and became the court engraver for King Louis XV. He later became the keeper of the king's drawings and the king's administrator of the arts. Cochin was considered an authority on matters of artistic taste in eighteenth-century France.
