This fair copy contains an ipreface by Ellen Mark, 3pp in length, dated 30th March 1891, the first paragraph as follows: "As the original of this autobiography will naturally go to the eldest son of my father's eldest son viz. to W. Penrose Lambert Mark, I have felt constrained to make this copy of it for the dear children of my father John Mark, who I have had the satisfaction of bringing up (as they lost first their mother and then their father while yet very young)) and whom I can only wish will prove worthy of such a grandfather". She goes on over the next 2 pages torecord her own reminiscences of William Mark. William Mark RN (b. Berwick on Tweed 5.3.1782, d. Alhaurin 13.1.1849) served in the Royal Navy on the Boreas (as an ordinary seaman); Hydra (Captain's Clerk;assistant secretary Commodore Bichester); The Victory (Assistant Secretary to Admiral Nelson), as well as the Hacyon; San Juan , leaving the Navy in 1815 at the end of the Napoleonic Wars.
