Printed in a small edition. Original publisher's light brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine. 5 3/4" x 8 3/4." Seventeen pages, complete. One black-and-white illustrated portrait of Stephen Hall Meek, complete. "Printed by Grant Dahlstrom at the Castle Press, Pasadena, California." A small, gilt sticker from a former owner, "Pauline R. More," is tipped in on back pastedown. Covers are very clean and intact except for a horizontal line running the width of the front cover about halfway down. Pages are intact but have faint dampstaining throughout. Pages also have a smell like a citrus-scented solvent. A Near Fine copy. Autobiography of "the oldest pioneer," Stephen Hall Meek (1807-1889), a fur trapper, prospector, and wagon train guide. He was the brother of another pioneer and mountain man, Joseph Meek (1810-1875), who later became a politician in Oregon Country and Oregon Territory. Meeks Cutoff in northeastern Oregon is named after Stephen. Excerpt from the Introduction: "So far as I am aware, this autobiography of Stephen Hall Meek with his portrait which appeared under the title, 'A Sketch of the Life of the First Pioneer' in The Golden Era, April, 1885, is the only account of 'The Oldest Pioneer' yet published.".
