Garrick S.Palmer,b.1913 Portsmouth, Hampshire.Studied at Portsmouth College of Art and Design (1951-5) and at the Royal Academy Schools (1955-9); awarded David Murray landscape scholarships (1955-7), Leverhulme scholarship (1957),Royal Academy gold medal and the Edward Scott travelling scholarship (1958).Head of the Foundation department at Winchester School of Art since 1964.
Painter,lithographer,wood engraver and photographer.For book illustrations he uses wood engravings,sometimes with a second colour (as in The Destruction of the Jews,1971) to create rich,dramatic effects.He later illustrated another edition of Benito Cereno,in 1972.
