After the Falklands War of 1982,military historian Martin Middlebrook produced one of the best researched and most detailed books on the military aspects of the war (published as 'Operation Corporate' in hardback and as 'Task Force' in paperback). All of Martin Middlebrook's previous books had been impartially written after researching and the gathering of personal accounts from the participants of both sides. But his application for a visa to visit Argentina and interview the Argentine commanders and ordinary servicemen who took part in the war were refused, and his first book on the subject had to be written without Argentine contributions. His patience was rewarded in 1987,when he was granted a visa as well as much co-operation from the Argentine Navy and Army, though not the Air Force. Using all the skill and experience of twenty years in such work,he interviewed sixty-two Argentines who had taken part in the 1982 war.He also obtained many new documents and a friendly Air Force officer gave him full English translations of a large number of Argentine pilots' personal accounts of their wartime flights. Martin Middlebrook is so far (then 1989) the only British military historian to have been allowed such open access to the Argentines who planned and fought the Falklands war.He managed to avoid becoming involved in the sovereignty issue and concentrated entirely on the military story. He has produced a genuine 'first' with this well-balanced and unique work. Among the men he met were the captain of the ship that took the scrap-metal workers to South Georgia; the admiral in charge of planning the Falklands invasion; the marine commander and other members of the invasion force; two brigadier-generals, five unit commanders and many other men of the large army force sent to occupy and defend the islands; the commander of the naval force that put to sea to engage the approaching British task force; the captain and seven other survivors of the Belgrano; a submarine captain; the naval pilots who sank HMS Ardent and HMS Sheffield; the officer in command of the Argentine garrison at Goose Green; and finally, the brigadier-general responsible for the defence of Port Stanley and soldiers of all ranks who fought the final battles that decided not only the outcome of the war but also the whole political future of the Falkland Islands and of a large area of the South Atlantic. This superb original work, which will be a most valuable contribution to military history, provides new light on the way in which Argentine forces were organized for the war,the plans and reactions of the commanders, the sufferings of many of the soldiers, the extraordinary devotion to the 'Malvinas' concept, the extensive deceptions practised by their leaders and the shame and disillusionment of their defeat.
