Nathan Milstein is one of the most celebrated violin virtuosi of the 20thC,and his memoirs give a fascinating account not only of his own brilliant career and of his artistic contemporaries,but also of his cultural and political experiences as a Russian emigre in Europe and America.
Fresh,highly-opinionated,witty and outspoken, his first-hand knowledge of the great artists and musicians of this century (then 1990) is incomparable and provides intriguing insights into the lives of Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Arturo Toscanini and George Balanchine among many others.Trained under Leopold Auer at the Petersburg Conservatory,Milstein drifted into defection during a musical tour abroad with friend and fellow musician Vladimir Horowitz.Apalled by brutal events witnessed in Petersburg and Odessa during the Revolution,and mistrustful of the
