Signature on small beige envelope by Donald Mitchell in black ink. No date, circa 1853-1854. 4" x 2 1/2." Envelope reads: "To introduce Mr. Bradford, Donald G. Mitchell, Esq. Venice." Former ownership inscription on back in pencil. Envelope, signature, and inscription are clean and intact. Donald Grant Mitchell (1822-1908) was an American essayist and novelist best-known for his two works, Reveries of a Bachelor, or Book of the Heart (1850) and Dream Life, a Fable of the Seasons (1851). He graduated from Yale College in 1841 where he had studied law, but soon after, he took an interest in the literary field. He commonly wrote under the pen name, Ik Marvel. Mitchell also served as U.S. consul in Venice, Italy from 1853-1854.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Fine. Binding: No Binding

Signature on beige card by Donald G. Mitchell (Ik Marvel) in black ink. Card adhered on beige paper with Royal Irish Linen, Marcus Ward & Co. watermark. Datelined February 1881 at Mitchell's Edgewood estate in New Haven, Connecticut. Card measures 5" x 3"; paper measures 7 1/2" x 10 1/2." Card, paper, and signature are very clean and intact. Card reads: "Donald G. Mitchell, Eaglewood, Feb. 1881."
