From Vol. I, page ix: "Caius Plinius Caecilius Secundus, commonly called Pliny the Younger, was one of the few illustrious adornments of literature, statesmanship, scholarship and manhood in the declining age, -- the latter part of the first century, A.D". "Pliny's Letters are the authentic source through which a considerable part of one of the most vital periods of Roman history has come down to us, and they supply a better memorial to himself and his time than it would be possible tor any modern scholar, however talented, to write. While Pliny's literary efforts were devoted chiefly to poetry and orations -- indeed he was called the Cicero of his time -- curiously enough these have nearly all perished, and his Letters supply the foundation upon which his fame securely rests"..
