Copper engraved folio map in original uncolored (black and white) state. No date, circa 1695. 18 3/4" x 15 1/8"; actual map area measures 17 5/8" x 14 1/8." Very minimal wear; has original centerline fold. This map was engraved by English cartographer Robert Morden (c. 1650-1703). William Camden (1551-1623), an English antiquarian, historian and topographer, was known for Britannia, the first chorographical atlas and survey of the islands of Great Britain and Ireland. The map shows the British Isles with roads, mountains, major cities, and natural water features. The tip of ancient Gallia (now France) is shown in the lower-right corner. Decorated title in upper-left corner. Longitudes are shown in both degrees and minutes along the border. Scales of distance in upper-right corner. Text is in Latin.. Map.
