During the tour, Edward inaugurated the Victoria Bridge in Montreal, laid a cornerstone of Parliament Hill in Ottawa, visited the tomb of George Washington at Mount Vernon with President James Buchanan, and met with eminent American writers including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. The tour was considered a success from a publicity standpoint.
