Mrs. J. E. Small (Clara Lipes Small), Bessie M. Small, et al : Original Copybook - Mrs. J. E. Small (Clara Lipes Small) and Bessie M. Small, Fort Wayne, Indiana, 1896-1900

Red alligator leather-covered boards backed with brown cloth. 1896-1900. 6 1/2" x 8." Unpaginated, circa 148 pages. Pages are clean and intact overall but there is a staining or glue residue on several of them, age toning throughout, and chipping at the edges (minimal loss of text on inside of back cover with only one or two words affected). Covers are clean and intact overall but have moderate rubbing to front and back, chipping at head and tail of spine, bumped corners, and moderate edge wear. A Very Good copy. An original copybook containing forty copied songs, poems, and stories. Also included is a two-page list of twenty-two pantomime performances given by Lida and Innes Small in the Fort Wayne Area at local churches and clubs from 1896-1898. There are three pages in front and back with tipped-in newspaper articles. John E. Small (1854-?) was a longtime resident of Fort Wayne. He married Clara Lipes in 1879. They had three daughters, Bessie, Lida (or, Elida), and Innes. They lived on Fulton Street in Fort Wayne at the time this copybook was kept. The copybook, which appears to be in two different hands, has many popular songs, poems, and stories of the day. Some of the songs were likely from vaudeville performances, and many of the poems are by James Whitcomb Riley. Among the other artists whose work has been copied herein are B. P. Shillaber, Sara Keables Hunt, Jules Benedier, W. R. Williams, Frank Castles, and Harry S. Miller. There are also some copied extracts from the magazines, the Ideal Orator and the Social Circle. The following is an index to the contents: "Daisy's Fate," "Mysterious Rappings," "Now my Papa tells ..." [first line], "The Fire Friend," "The Cunning Baby" [song], "Lament of a Four-Year-Old," "The Elf Child" [Little Orphan Annie], "The Train-misser at Union Depot," "The Two Little Stockings," "Comin' Thro' the Rye," "Kigry Mill," "Town and Country," "The Minuet," "Papa's Letter," "Little Joe's Flower," "A' Old Played Out Song," "Who Santy Claus Was," "The Lost Child," "The Old Man and Jim," "Selections for Encores," "Romancin,'" "Won't You Be my Sweetheart" [song], "A Cute Baby Boy," "Little Nora Malone," "What the Little Girl Said" [story], " "The Fishing Party," "Katrina's Visit to New York" [story], "The Runaway Boy," "Banford's Burglar-Alarm" [story], "How 'Old Mose' Counted Eggs" [story], "In the Baggage Coach Ahead" [story], "By Special Request" [Monologue], "The Retort Discourteous," "An Affectionate Letter," "De Pint Wid Ole Pete," "Mark Twain and the Interviewer," "Maggie, the Cows Are in the Clover" [song], "A Cruel Hiss" [song], "The Sweetest Story Ever Told," "How a Husband's Mother Did It" [story], and "She Was Happy Till She Met You" [song]..
