Lindley Murray (1745-1826) was an American author, lawyer, and grammarian. He is perhaps best-known for authoring a number of English-language grammar books that were popular in both the United States and England. At a young age, Murray was set on pursuing a literary career despite his father's protestations and insistence that he choose an occupation in commerce. Murray had run away to a boarding school to study French but was soon found out and brought back home. However, Murray had apparently written such well-composed arguments in favor of a literary career that his father's lawyer suggested to him that Murray instead pursue a career in law. Murray thus became a lawyer but maintained an interest in literature and grammar. In 1784, Murray moved to England for health reasons and began his professional literary career. His first work, The Power of Religion on the Mind, was published in 1787 after which he wrote his famous grammar books.. Manuscript. Book Condition: Collectible-Very Good. Binding: No Binding
