Trams originated in New York in 1832 when
two horse-drawn single-deck cars reached
'breath-taking speeds on flat iron strips that served as rails'.Regular electric tram services first came to the West and South West of England at Bristol in 1895.
They proved immediately popular and within
a few years many other towns followed with
their own systems bringing cheap travel to
many who previously could not afford it. Throughout their existence electric trams proved highly successful but they were not
to last.By the late 1920's and early 1930's many had outlived their usefulness.
Road transport was on the increase and the
rival motor bus was becoming more reliable.
